The Basics

Solar panels convert sunlight into clean, renewable energy, helping reduce electricity bills and lower carbon footprints for homes and businesses.

The Benefits

  • Lower Electricity Bills – Generate your own power and reduce monthly utility costs.

  • Government Grants Available –The ECO Scheme gives you access to grants for heating upgrades and solar panel installations.
  • Energy Independence – Rely less on the grid and protect against rising energy prices.

  • Increased Home Value – Homes with solar panels often sell for more.

  • Renewable Energy Source – Solar is clean, sustainable, and helps fight climate change.

Solar Panel Grant

A solar panel grant helps cover the cost of installing solar panels, making renewable energy more affordable for homeowners.

How much do solar panels cost?

For a typical 3kW to 4kW solar panel system (enough for most homes), costs range from £5,000 to £7,000, fully installed. Eligible for funding? You could get your heating upgraded and solar panels installed for free! Take advantage of full-cost solar grants and start saving energy and money today.

Do solar panels really save money?

Yes — you can save £200 to £500+ per year on your electricity bills, depending on usage and system size. If you add a battery, savings can be even higher. Over 25 years, this can add up to £6,000 to £15,000.

How do solar panels work?

They use photovoltaic (PV) cells to convert sunlight into electricity. That electricity powers your home appliances, and any extra can be stored in a battery or exported back to the National Grid.

What happens at night or on cloudy days?

Panels don’t generate electricity at night and produce less on cloudy days, though they still work. You’ll use electricity from the grid or from your home battery if you have one.

How long do solar panels last?

Solar panels typically last 25–30 years in the UK. Most come with 25-year performance warranties and require very little upkeep. Inverters (which convert DC to AC) may need replacing after 10–15 years.

Is my home suitable for solar panels?

Most UK homes are suitable if:

  • The roof faces south, southeast, or southwest

  • There’s minimal shading from trees or chimneys

  • The roof is structurally sound
Flat roofs can also work with special mounting.

What maintenance is required?

Solar panels are very low maintenance. Rain generally keeps them clean. It’s good practice to have a system check every few years, especially for the inverter. You might occasionally wash them if you live in a dusty or bird-heavy area.

Will solar panels increase my home’s value?

Yes – solar panels can make your home more attractive to eco-conscious buyers and reduce running costs. Studies suggest homes with solar may sell faster and potentially at a premium.

Are there government incentives for generating your own electric?

Yes. The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) lets you earn money for excess electricity exported to the grid — typically 4p to 15p per kWh depending on your energy supplier. There’s no VAT on solar installations from 2022 to 2027, saving 20% on the cost.

Can I go completely off-grid with solar?

Technically yes, but it’s expensive and uncommon. You’ll need a large solar array, a high-capacity battery system, and probably a backup generator. Most people stay grid-connected for peace of mind.
