Here are some quick tips to help usually identify if your boiler is non-condensing or condensing…
- When was your boiler installed? UK energy efficiency regulations require that all gas boilers installed after 2005 should be a energy efficient condensing and/or combi boiler heating system.
- Do you have a metal flue? To help we have included some picture of metal flues on the exterior wall to where you will find your boiler. This usually is a sign that your boiler is non-condensing.
The difference between condensing and non-condensing boilers…
Water vapour is one by-product created in the combustion process when the boiler burns fuel. This water vapour contains heat and steam. Envisage opening a window and putting a saucepan full of boiling water on the hob until all the water boilers away into steam. All the heat you’ve paid for has literally gone out of the window.
This is not far from what happens in a non-condensing boiler. The water vapour from burning fuel is expelled via the flue, heating outside instead of your home or hot water.
Condensing boilers don’t let that heat go to waste. Alternatively, they draw so much heat out from that vapour, it condenses back into water. This recycled heated water is then used to heat the water for your radiators or the hot water tank. As a result of this means that condensing boilers require less fuel to generate the same amount of heat. Furthermore, saving you money on your energy bills and being more environmentally friendly.

According to the energysavingtrust.org.uk. Here’s how much you could save on your fuel bill (£/year) in a gas-heated home. When replacing an old gas boiler with a new A-rated condensing boiler with a programmer, room thermostat and thermostatic radiator controls (TRVs):
